The merger will be effective July 1, 2013. According to the release, the new entity will have single-board governance and the executive management team, middle management team and medical staffs will be unified. However, foundations will continue to raise funds for their specific hospitals, and funds raised in each unique community still stay in each community.
Ken Kozel, current CEO and president of Shore Health, will serve as CEO and president of the unified health system. Jim Ross, current CEO and president of Chester River Health, will continue to serve until the merger is complete.
All three existing hospitals in the Shore Health System will remain open and will continue to operate as acute-care, inpatient facilities with emergency departments. The combined health system will also continue to operate hospitals in Cambridge, Md., Chestertown and Easton; a freestanding emergency center and adjacent medical pavilion in Queenstown, Md.; and other centers located throughout Maryland.
According to the release, staffing may also be added, relocated or eliminated based upon regional needs.
