PwC: Healthcare M&A surpasses 250 deals for 5th consecutive quarter

The number of healthcare mergers and acquisitions deals exceeded 250 in Q3, continuing the trend for the fifth consecutive quarter, according to a recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

While the total deal volume for healthcare M&A during the third quarter of 2018 was slightly lower than the average deal volume during the last seven consecutive quarters, levels are still robust in historical terms, the report states.

Here are four things to know from the PwC report:

1. Quarterly deal counts in the healthcare space have exceeded 200 deals since the fourth quarter of 2014 and have exceeded 250 deals for the past five consecutive quarters.

2. Deal value during the third quarter marked the lowest level since the first quarter of 2017. The total deal value of the M&A transactions that took place during the third quarter was $15.9 billion — a 35.8 percent decline from the second quarter of 2018.

3. PwC calculated 261 deals took place during the third quarter — a 10.9 percent decline compared to the second quarter of 2018.

4. The year's only megadeal took place during the third quarter and accounted for 35 percent of disclosed deal value.
