Public to vote on measure to renew California hospital's lease with Dignity Health in June

Citizens will vote on a proposal in June discussing a potential lease agreement between the San Andreas, Calif.-based Mark Twain Health Care District and San Francisco-based Dignity Health to operate Mark Twain Medical Center for the next 30 years, according to the Calaveras Enterprise.

Here are four things to know about the vote and the measure.

1. Mark Twain Medical Center's current lease with Dignity Health expires Dec. 31, 2019. Officials opted to renew the organization's lease agreement with Dignity Health after Roseville, Calif.-based Adventist Health retracted its bid to operate the hospital last December.

2. Under Measure A, which county residents will vote on in June, Dignity's lease with the Mark Twain Medical Center will remain in place for the next 30 years, continuing the organizations' affiliation that began in 1990.

3. As part of the lease, Dignity Health will pay the MTHCD a monthly fee of $100,000, roughly $76,800 more than its current monthly fee. Dignity will also award the hospital foundation a $2 million grant to fill gaps in the county's healthcare system. The hospital will also be encouraged to engage in other partnerships and affiliations to leverage additional funds.

4. Officials plan on instituting changes to the hospital's governing board, which currently comprises three Dignity Health representatives, three MTHCD board members and one community member, if the measure passes. The new board will be composed of three Dignity officials and one MTHCD board member. Officials will also create a community board to address non-finance related issues and comprise three community members, one MTHCD board member, one Dignity representative, the hospital's CEO, and the hospital's chief of medical staff.
