Erie, Pa.-based Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is in discussion to acquire Bradford (Pa.) Regional Medical Center from Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health, The Buffalo News reported Feb. 26.
Five things to know:
1. Kaleida Health announced Feb. 17 that it planned to close Bradford Regional’s inpatient, emergency and long-term care services by mid-2026 and transition its campus to an ambulatory, outpatient care model pending approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The closure and transition will affect 238 employees, who will have the opportunity to seek other positions at Kaleida Health.
2. Under the proposed acquisition, LECOM would assume ownership and operational responsibility for the Bradford Regional Medical Center campus, as well as the Pavilion, a 95-bed skilled nursing facility, according to the report.
3. The negotiations have paused Kaleida’s plans to close the skilled nursing facility and relocate its more than 50 residents, according to the report. Kaleida, however, said it will continue with plans to close Bradford Regional’s inpatient unit and emergency department.
4. Kaleida said it is working with LECOM on a leasing arrangement that would allow the system to rent space to perform primary and specialty outpatient care on the hospital campus.
5. Negotiations are still underway. If a definitive agreement is reached, the acquisition would be subject to regulatory approvals.
