The Establishment and Project Review Committee of the New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council voted unanimously Aug. 27 for Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Maimonides Health to join NYC Health + Hospitals.
“I know that financial stability matters, because we’ve achieved it at NYC Health + Hospitals since I joined the system 8 years ago,” Mitchell Katz, MD, president and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals said in an Aug. 31 news release. “At that time, we had a $2 billion deficit, and there were a lot of fears we would close services or lay off clinicians. Instead, we figured out how to grow out of it, increasing services, stabilizing our work force, and deepening our relationships with the community. I’m excited to build the same kind of vision at Maimonides while preserving its historic cultural identity and practices.”
Maimonides moved to join NYC Health + Hospitals in late December 2025. The partnership will bring Maimonides three hospitals and dozens of community-based sites under the public health system.
It will also be supported by $2.2 billion over a five year period from the state of New York to protect safety net healthcare in the area it serves.
Maimonides will also adopt Epic’s electronic health record platform under the transaction. The proposed partnership now moves to a full council vote, which is scheduled for Sept. 17.
“By joining NYC Health + Hospitals, Maimonides will receive more than $2.2 billion in grant funding over five years, including more than $500 million to adopt a state-of-the-art electronic health record system, upgrade our labor and delivery rooms and make other needed capital improvements,” Ken Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Health, said in the release. “We hope to receive final approval from PHHPC in September and other regulatory and legal approvals shortly.”
NYC Health + Hospitals comprises 11 hospitals, more than 46,000 employees and over 70 patient care locations across NYC’s five boroughs. It has a network of outpatient, neighborhood-based primary and specialty care centers, trauma centers, nursing homes, post-acute care centers, a home care agency and MetroPlusHealth, the release said.
