Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey, Mich., will be eliminating 48 positions due to a particularly difficult winter, according to a Harbor Light Newspaper.

A hospital official explained the job cuts stem from a “very soft” winter and a low number of elective procedures. The job cuts include six management positions and 26 staff positions such as transcriptionists. The job cuts do not affect those directly involved with patient care, according to the news report.

The job cuts were announced as the hospital continues to face increasing bad debt and charity care, which increased 162 percent in the last five years, according to the news report. Despite its challenges, the hospital is working to remain financially viable through investments in key service lines that match patient demographics as well as preventive medicine.
