The Beaufort Regional Health Authority Board of Commissioners has voted to lease Beaufort Regional Health System in Washington, N.C., to University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, according to a Beaufort Observer report.
UHS is now offering $30 million upfront, rather than its initial $24 million offer and an option to buy the property at the end of the lease for $10 million.
Beaufort’s medical staff had recommended an affiliation with UHS over other bidders earlier this month. When BRHA chose Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems for affiliation, physicians and community members protested. CHS permanently withdrew its offer last week due to the adverse community reactions and controversy.
