Community Health Systems has formed a definitive agreement to acquire MetroSouth Medical Center, a 244-hospital in Blue Island, Ill., according to a CHS news release.

The sale is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2012. If it’s completed, MetroSouth will be the ninth CHS-affiliated hospital in Illinois. It’s located approximately 20 miles south of Chicago.

“The acquisition of MetroSouth Medical Center will offer a compelling opportunity to expand our operations in Illinois, especially in the northeast section of the state around Chicago,” CHS CEO Wayne T. Smith said in the news release. “The medical staff and employees of this hospital are clearly focused on providing high-quality healthcare services for their patients and we look forward to supporting their efforts with our resources, operations experience and clinical initiatives.”
