Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health has acquired the state’s largest independent primary care group for $111 million.
On March 2, the board of trustees for the Medical University Hospital Authority – part of MUSC Health – unanimously voted to purchase Palmetto Primary Care Physicians, according to a news release. The transaction is effective March 3.
PPCP is the largest independent multispecialty practice in South Carolina, with 31 physicians, 97 advanced practice providers and 40 medical practices. Under the deal, the group will become a nonprofit entity within MUSC Health.
The move is expected to expand access to the region’s access to primary care, leaders said.
“This transaction ensures long‑term stability for our physicians, specialists and staff while allowing us to expand the services our communities rely on,” Mark Redwine, MD, president of the PPCP board, said in a news release. “Joining MUSC Health provides the scale, infrastructure and academic partnership needed to expand access and deliver even stronger value‑based care.”
