Joplin, Mo.-based Freeman Health System and Fort Scott, Kan.-based Kansas Renewal Institute have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to explore the future ownership and operation of Freeman Fort Scott Hospital.
No final agreement has been reached, according to a Sept. 21 joint news release shared with Becker’s. Any potential transaction remains subject to due diligence, negotiation of definitive agreements, regulatory review and other necessary approvals.
The system opened the 10-bed Freeman Fort Scott Hospital Sept. 4, 2025. Since then, health systems nationwide — particularly those serving rural communities — have continued to face workforce, reimbursement, operational and financial pressures, according to the release.
Freeman has worked with local leaders, providers and stakeholders to evaluate options to support the hospital’s long-term sustainability, including operational improvements and care delivery models such as the rural emergency hospital designation.
“The letter of intent provides Freeman Health System and KRI the opportunity to evaluate whether a transition of ownership and operations could further support the long-term access to healthcare,” the release said.
Patient care, hospital operations and services will continue as normal while the organizations evaluate a potential transition of ownership and operations, the release said.
Less than a year after opening the hospital, the system completed a $110 million acquisition of four Northwest Arkansas hospitals from Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health System June 1.
