MedWest Leaders Exploring Spinoff, Fear Carolinas Operator Would Bail

Officials from three-hospital system MedWest, based in Clyde, N.C., have hired consulting firm Stroudwater Associates to determine the outcome of potentially dissolving its system and the impacts it could have with its manager, Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System, according to a report by the Smoky Mountain News.

Two of the three hospitals — MedWest-Harris in Sylva, N.C., and MedWest-Swain in Bryson City, N.C., which together form WestCare — expressed interest in terminating their 2010 alliance with MedWest-Haywood in Clyde, citing loss of patients, revenue and status to Haywood.

Harris and Swain would need three-fourths of the shared board members, half of whom represent Haywood, to agree to dissolve the partnership, which seems to have benefited Haywood’s financial performance, according to the report. If the two hospitals did have their way, however, they’d likely lose their management affiliation with Carolinas, so they’ve been gauging interest from other potential partners, according to the report.
