When the five physicians gave UPMC their six-month notice, as required by their contracts, UPMC revoked their hospital privileges, according to the report. The physicians are on administrative leave until the end of 2012, and will begin at Highmark on Jan. 1, according to the report.

UPMC and West Penn/Highmark have been battling for market share, with each system employing new physicians in 2012. According to the report, West Penn and Highmark have employed more than 100 physicians this year, with “only a few” coming from UPMC. On the other hand, UPMC has employed about 400 physicians, with “some” coming from West Penn/Highmark, according to the report.
