Health system M&A revenues hit $45B in 2022, mega mergers surge: 7 notes

Healthcare transaction revenues hit all-time highs in 2022, according to an analysis from Kaufman Hall.

Seven quick notes:

1. There were 53 hospital and health system mergers and acquisitions announced last year.
2. Total transaction revenue exceeded $45 billion.
3. Fifteen percent of the transactions had revenues exceeding $1 billion.
4. Sixty-six percent of the deals were nonprofit entities acquiring nonprofit entities.
5. Nineteen percent of the deals were nonprofit entities acquiring for-profit entities.
6. Smaller party average annual revenue was $852 million, up $200 million from 2021.
7. Four of the 17 fourth quarter transactions were mega mergers where the smaller party’s revenue exceeded $1 billion.
