University Healthcare System was created through a partnership between Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare and New Orleans-based Tulane University.
The organizations will enter into a period of due diligence. Officials expect to finalize a definitive lease agreement by the first quarter of 2018, pending approval by the Jefferson Parish Council.
The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
