David Dempsey Rumored as Next CFO of HCA’s Physician Services Subsidiary, Other Healthcare Executive Moves

The following is excerpted from Jarrard Phillips Cate & Hancock’s Inside Baseball newsletter, a good-natured (and often humorous) insiders’ guide to Nashville’s healthcare industry.

Speaking of HCA, word has it that David Dempsey has been tapped as CFO of HCA’s physician services subsidiary, which supports roughly 600 physician practices across the country (and is expected to grow significantly, according to the website). Dempsey, well-respected from his days at Avondale as a hospital analyst, served in CFO roles at Psych Solutions, former hospital chain Attentus and —  going way back — Quorum Health Resources.

Former CEO of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt Dr. Kevin Churchwell (brother of well-known Vandy cardiologist Dr. Andre Churchwell) has landed at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he’s CEO and also serves as SVP at Nemours. We’ve lost count, frankly, at just how many senior people have left Vandy over the last 18-24 months. The latest is long-time — we’re talking 25 years — head of news and communications Bill Hance, husband of Tennessean columnist Ms. Cheap, former reporter/editor of the Nashville Banner (where Churchwell’s father was a reporter), and one of the only reporters to see Elvis’ body inside his casket at Graceland. (That’s so much Nashville trivia wrapped up in two people that we just couldn’t resist.) John Houser, who has worked under Hance for years at VUMC, will take over Hance’s role.

And speaking of more growth for Nashville healthcare, CredenceHealth, which announced its sale to ACS earlier this month, says it’s gearing up for rapid growth — tripling its business — in the coming months. Credence will be rebranded to Midas+Live and former CEO Justin Lanning will remain in Nashville to head up business development, sales and marketing strategy for the company. Marty Fitzgerald, meanwhile, will continue to lead operations. Lanning was formerly with Healthways before he founded Credence and raised money from local investors.
