Pascack Valley Hospital closed in 2007 after it went bankrupt. Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center and a partner acquired the facility in 2008 and proposed reopening the facility, which would be renamed HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley.
Valley Hospital’s announcement to pursue litigation comes shortly after the state’s Health Planning Board voted overwhelmingly to recommend HackensackUMC’s reopening to Health Commissioner Mary O’Dowd. She is expected to announce her decision by the end of the year. Valley Hospital cannot actually file a lawsuit until Commissioner O’Dowd comes to a decision.
Valley Hospital and Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center have long opposed the plan to reopen HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley, arguing the county already has too many vacant hospital beds.
