The affiliation, which was announced earlier this week, will allow both health systems to expand patient care services and develop new collaborative programs, according to a news release.

Under the agreement, EHMC and HackensackUHN will remain independent healthcare providers and maintain responsibility for their individual finances and operations, including their boards, administration, physicians and employees.

With the new collaboration, both entities will be able to benefit the communities they serve by enhancing access to a variety of patient care services and developing population health management programs, the release reads. The clinical partnership will create regional models of care “with an emphasis on difficult-to-access services targeting multicultural communities, preventive medicine and early intervention.”

Further, EHMC will become a member of HackensackUHN, which will enable EHMC to cost-effectively implement an upgrade of information technology systems, including its EMR, according to a news release.

Additionally, in January 2015, Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., and HackensackUHN announced plans to form a private, four-year school of medicine, based at the former Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. biomedical facility in Nutley, N.J. And through the affiliation, the parties anticipate that EHMC will serve as a major teaching site for the HackensackUHN/SHU medical school and its graduate medical education programs.

In an early clinical alliance, EHMC and HackensackUHN have agreed to create a regional cardiac surgery program, which is expected to become one of the largest such programs in northern New Jersey, according to a news release.
