Pending approval by the District of Columbia State Health Planning and Development Agency, the 477,000-square-foot expansion project would be built next to the existing hospital structure. It will include an emergency department, operating rooms, intensive care beds, a rooftop helipad and additional imaging services.

The existing hospital structure will also undergo renovations. The project is expected to be completed in 2020.

“This exciting new medical and surgical pavilion represents one of the most significant reinvestments in our organization and is absolutely critical to our ability to continue to provide high level, world class care to a community that has depended on us for decades,” Richard Goldberg, MD, president of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, said in a statement. “We continue to work actively and collaboratively with the community and with Georgetown University through the Georgetown Community Partnership so that the result is a top-rate facility that meets a shared vision for the future.”
