FTC speaks out against Wellmont, MSHA merger again 1 week before decision

With one week left before the Tennessee Commissioner of Health is slated to decide on the proposed merger between Kingsport, Tenn.-based Wellmont Health and Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance, the Federal Trade Commission once again voiced its opposition to the deal, according to WJHL News.

The agency submitted a report to the Tennessee Department of Health Jan. 5 urging the commissioner to reject the health systems’ application to merge. The agency maintains the proposed merger would “harm the public by removing competition,” according to the article.

Members of the FTC also stated their opposition to the proposal at numerous public hearings on the issue last year.

The health systems released a joint statement acknowledging they received a copy of the FTC’s latest comments and plan to submit a response to the department of health, according to the article.

The state commissioner of health has until Jan. 20 to decide on the issue.
