County officials want to regain control of CHS-owned Indiana hospital

Some elected officials have expressed concern over the future of Indiana University Health LaPorte (Ind.) Hospital after Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems became the majority owner, according to the South Bend Tribune.

LaPorte County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday calling on CHS to publicize the financial terms of its investment in the hospital, according to the article. Commissioners cited media reports detailing CHS' $15 billion debt and tumbling stock price as a cause for concern.

CHS finalized an agreement to acquire an 80 percent stake in LaPorteHospital in March.

Officials said prior to the change in ownership, the hospital had plans to build a medical clinic and wellness complex. With CHS' declining financial stability, it is unclear whether those plans will continue.

The resolution calls on CHS to publicize its operating agreement so the community can ''evaluate plans for construction of the new LaPorte Hospital as well as other services and staffing plans." Releasing the information, officials argue, will also help "determine under what conditions [the county may] reacquire interests in LaPorte Hospital to once again commit its purpose and mission as a nonprofit serving LaPorte and the surrounding community," according to the article.

Rebecca Ayer, a spokesperson for CHS, said the for-profit hospital operator remains committed to the residents of LaPorte and that plans for the medical center are in their final stage.

"Community Health Systems continues to be highly invested in the future success of the LaPorte and Starke hospitals and has made a $140 million commitment toward strategic projects, including a replacement hospital for LaPorte County, as well as investments in services, technology and physician recruitment to meet the needs of the community," said Ms. Ayer.
