Catholic Health Partners, which currently owns Mercy and hospitals in other regions under the same name, will retain the Mercy title.
The hospital is currently using focus groups to explore possible names for the health system.
The purchase price offered by CHS was not disclosed, but the deal includes a $68-million pledge from CHS to invest in Mercy facilities over the next five years as well as $2 million to a foundation that will promote community health.
The Pennsylvania Attorney General and the Vatican must approve the deal before it is finalized. Mercy will lose its Catholic affiliation as a result of the sale, but CHS has said it will keep the system’s religious symbols, chapel and chaplaincy program, according to the report.
