Avera to Acquire St. Mary’s Healthcare, Gettysburg Medical Center in South Dakota

Avera, a health system based in Sioux Falls, S.D., is acquiring St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre, S.D., as well as its affiliate hospital, Gettysburg (S.D.) Medical Center, according to an ArgusLeader.com report.

According to the report, Avera and St. Mary’s Healthcare have been considering a merger since last spring.

St. Mary’s Healthcare is part of Catholic Health Initiatives in Englewood, Colo. CHI and Avera are both faith-based entities, qualifying the acquisition as a transfer of ownership within the Church, according to the report.

According to the report, Avera is scheduled to take ownership of St. Mary’s Healthcare and Gettysburg Medical Center Jan. 1.
