Capella Healthcare acquires Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center

Franklin, Tenn.-based Capella Healthcare has acquired 116-bed Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville, S.C., from subsidiaries of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.

In January 2014, CHS received approval from the Federal Trade Commission to acquire competitor Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates. However, the FTC mandated CHS divest Carolina Pines and Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Ala.

In October, subsidiaries of CHS entered into a definitive agreement to sell their ownership interest in Carolina Pines to Capella, and the deal has now received FTC approval.

"We're pleased to welcome Carolina Pines Medical Center to the Capella Healthcare family," said Michael Wiechar, president and CEO of Capella. "We believe that our affiliation will be beneficial to both of our organizations."
