Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, which owns Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, had planned to acquire Madera Community Hospital but was unable to meet California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s conditions for approving the transaction.

The requirements included accepting price caps to keep services affordable, maintaining Medicare and Medi-Cal certification, and maintaining services at the hospital for five years, according to GV Wire.

“The financial strain the pandemic has placed on Madera Community Hospital has resulted in a large loss. Hospital leadership has reached out to other possible partners as well as working with our legislators in an effort to find funding for the hospital without success. It is with much sadness and disappointment that the hospital will now face bankruptcy and closure,” reads a statement from the hospital.

Madera will close the emergency room, obstetrics, outpatient and surgery services Jan. 3, and stop accepting new patients at that time. The hospital’s rural health clinics will close Jan. 10 and all patients will be transferred to other facilities by Jan. 17.
