California Attorney General Approves PIH, Downey Regional Merger

California Attorney General Kamala Harris has approved a proposed merger between Whittier, Calif.-based PIH Health and Downey (Calif.) Regional Medical Center.

Kamala Harris Official Attorney General PhotoDowney Regional, a 90-bed facility, initially applied in April for permission from the attorney general to merge with PIH, a 548-bed facility affiliated with more than 150 physicians and formerly known as Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital. The green light from the attorney general is the second step forward for the acquisition this month, following the Downey (Calif.) city council's approval of PIH's $9.85 million purchase of land occupied by Downey Regional.

Earlier this year, Downey Regional also entered into an agreement with PIH Health to manage its day-to-day operations as part of the merger.
