Alpena Regional, MidMichigan sign affiliation deal: 3 things to know

Alpena (Mich.) Regional Medical Center has signed a definitive agreement to partner with nonprofit MidMichigan Health in Midland, an affiliate of University of Michigan Health System, according to a report from The Alpena News.

Here are three things to know about the affiliation.

1. The signing of a definitive agreement comes a few months after the two parties signed a letter of intent. The letter of intent was set to expire Feb. 13.

2. Now that a definitive agreement has been signed, Eric Smith, board chairman of ARMC, expressed excitement about moving forward. "We feel firm enough that we can get this signed and move into future planning with MidMichigan with the notion we are waiting on a few items to pass," he said, according to the report. "We're hoping it might be a 30-day process, but we're not sure. This has been a lot of work, and it's a relief to finally sign an agreement."

3. The affiliation is contingent on the legislation being passed by Michigan lawmakers to allow ARMC to convert to a nonprofit corporation, and final approval from the Alpena County Board of Commissioners.
