Allina is combining the two hospitals to eliminate duplicate services. Once the two hospitals merge, Allina will change Unity Hospital’s name to Mercy Hospital – Unity Campus.

“It’s one hospital with two buildings,” David Kanihan, an Allina spokesman, told the Star Tribune. “They’re separated by 10 miles, but they’re serving essentially the same market.”

The two hospitals will begin operating under one license Jan. 1, 2017.
