Schenectady, N.Y.-based Ellis Medicine is evaluating strategic partnership options, and Albany (N.Y.) Med Health System confirmed June 22 that it has submitted a response to Ellis Medicine’s formal request for proposals.
The development came the same day Ellis and Albany-based St. Peter’s Health Partners announced they had mutually agreed to end nearly six years of merger discussions and terminate their management and professional services agreements, effective Aug. 16.
“As the region’s largest and only academic medical system, we would view it as a privilege to have the opportunity to explore a strategic affiliation that would help Ellis continue its long history of delivering high-quality care to our shared regional community,” Albany Med President and CEO Dan Pickett said in a statement to Becker’s.
Ellis Medicine’s board initiated the RFP process after determining it had a fiduciary responsibility to reassess strategic options given the significant changes that had occurred in the healthcare market since 2020. In a statement to Becker’s, Ellis said its board is reviewing submissions, though it declined to discuss specific proposals or organizations that participated, citing confidentiality agreements.
Ellis Medicine is a 438-bed community and teaching health system with more than 3,300 employees. Albany Med is the region’s largest nonprofit academic health system, with hospitals in Albany, Hudson, Glens Falls and Saratoga, according to its website.
