The following hospital mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place within the past week, beginning with the most recent.

1. GWU Hospital Considers United Medical Center Takeover
George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., discussed the possibility of assuming control of United Medical Center — also located in D.C. — from the District, according to an executive with close ties to the hospital.

2. HMA Shareholders to Vote on CHS Deal in January
Shareholders of Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates will vote on the pending merger with Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems on Jan. 8, 2014.

3. Hudson Valley HealthAlliance to Affiliate With Larger System Before Closing Hospital
In order to remain solvent, HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley in Kingston, N.Y., will complete the initiatives of physician alignment, population health management and affiliation with a larger system before its planned closure of Kingston Hospital.

4. UW Health, Aurora Health Care Dip Toes Into Affiliation Discussions
Two of Wisconsin's leading integrated health systems — UW Health in Madison and Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee — initiated exploratory discussions to find how they can collaborate and "enhance the delivery of high-quality, affordable healthcare to Wisconsin and the surrounding region."

5. Cadence Health, Rockford Health System to Merge
Winfield, Ill.-based Cadence Health and Rockford (Ill.) Health System signed a letter of intent to combine their organizations.

6. Rome Memorial Hospital Signs Deal to Become Bassett Healthcare Affiliate
Bassett Healthcare Network, a six-hospital system based in Cooperstown, N.Y., and Rome (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital signed a nonbinding letter of intent to partner.

7. Casa Grande Regional Medical Center Seeks Potential Buyer
Casa Grande (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center announced it is seeking a potential buyer for at least part of the hospital.

8. University of Chicago Medicine Forms Affiliation With Franciscan Alliance
The University of Chicago Medicine, one of the major academic medical center hubs within the city, signed a master affiliation agreement with Franciscan Alliance, a Catholic health system based in northern Indiana.

9. Aspen Valley Hospital Joins Mayo's Care Network
Aspen (Colo.) Valley Hospital was selected to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network, the first Colorado provider to be included.

10. UNC Health Care Could Partner With Nash Health Care
UNC Health Care System in Chapel Hill, N.C., said it is considering a partnership with Rocky Mount, N.C.-based Nash Health Care.

11. War Memorial Hospital Considering Affiliation Partners
War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., announced it is considering offers to partner or merge with other healthcare organizations.

12. LCMC Health Signs Letter of Intent to Operate New Orleans East Hospital
The Orleans Parish Hospital Service District A and New Orleans-based LCMC Health signed a nonbinding letter of intent to work toward LCMC operating the New Orleans East Hospital.

13. Appalachian Regional Healthcare to Shut Down Purchased Hospital
Appalachian Regional Healthcare, based in Lexington, Ky., said it plans to close Williamson (W.Va.) Memorial Hospital after acquiring it.

14. Salem Health Considers 7 Partnership Offers
Salem (Ore.) Health received offers from seven different healthcare organizations to partner or merge.
