Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems has been one of the healthcare industry’s most active hospital sellers in recent years, continuing a divestiture strategy that has reshaped ownership in markets across the country.
Since 2024, buyers of CHS hospitals have included large systems such as AdventHealth and Ascension, as well as smaller regional systems seeking to expand into new markets.
Here are 10 health systems that have acquired CHS hospitals since 2024:
1. Joplin, Mo.-based Freeman Health System on June 1 acquired CHS subsidiary Northwest Health, based in Springdale, Ark., for $110 million. The acquisition of the four-hospital system doubled Freeman’s hospital footprint.
2. Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital Health System on April 1 acquired Crestwood Medical Center for $459 million. The deal includes all assets tied to the Huntsville-based, 180-bed hospital, including its associated outpatient centers, practices and a freestanding emergency department in Harvest, Ala. Huntsville Hospital Health System now operates 15 hospitals.
3. Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt Health on Feb. 2 acquired CHS’ 80% interest in Tennova Healthcare-Clarksville (Tenn.) Hospital and the freestanding emergency room Tennova ER-Sango. Vanderbilt had held a 20% minority stake in the facilities since 2021. The acquisition marks Vanderbilt’s fourth regional hospital expansion. The rebranded Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital joins the organization’s network of regional medical centers, which includes Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital in Lebanon, Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital in Coffee County and Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital in Shelbyville.
4. Tenor Health Foundation on Feb. 1 acquired three Pennsylvania hospitals from CHS for $33 million plus a $15 million promissory note. Under the deal, Tenor, a newly formed nonprofit, acquired Regional Hospital of Scranton (186 beds), Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton (122 beds) and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital (369 beds). Tenor was founded by CEO Radha Savitala, a healthcare attorney who led transactions for Orange, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare for more than 10 years and worked with senior executives on growth strategies. Tenor acquired Sharon (Pa.) Regional Hospital — formerly owned by Dallas-based Steward Health Care — in January 2025 and reopened the hospital that May.
5. St. Louis-based Ascension in July 2025 acquired full ownership of Cedar Park (Texas) Medical Center from CHS for $436 million in cash. CHS sold its 80% ownership stake in the 126-bed hospital to Ascension Seton, a subsidiary of the health system that operates 13 hospitals and 222 care sites in Central Texas. With full ownership, Ascension President and CEO Eduardo Conrado said the health system can “accelerate growth, streamline operations and introduce new services that meet the evolving needs of the community.”
6. Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System in April 2025 completed its $284 million acquisition of Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and related businesses in Mooresville, N.C., from CHS. The 123-bed acute care hospital was renamed Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital.
7. Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth in March 2025 acquired ShorePoint Health-Port Charlotte (Fla.) and certain assets of ShorePoint Health-Punta Gorda (Fla.) for $260 million. The 254-bed Port Charlotte hospital was renamed AdventHealth Port Charlotte. The 208-bed ShorePoint Health-Punta Gorda sustained irreparable damage during Hurricanes Helene and Milton in fall 2024, indefinitely suspending inpatient operations. John Wright, marketing director of Port Charlotte, Fla.-based ShorePoint Health, confirmed to Becker’s in December 2024 that it would not reopen.
8. Gulfport, Miss.-based Memorial Health System in January 2025 completed its acquisition of Merit Health Biloxi (Miss.) from CHS. With the acquisition of Merit Health Biloxi, Memorial is now a three-hospital system. The system’s president and CEO said the close of the transaction allows Memorial to “build on the collaborative foundation we’ve shared with Merit Health Biloxi and continue shaping the future of healthcare on the Gulf Coast.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
9. Statesville, N.C.-based Iredell Health System in October 2024 acquired Davis Regional Psychiatric Hospital and Davis Regional Medical Center from CHS for an undisclosed amount. Iredell President and CEO John Green said the system recognized the critical need for behavioral health services in the area and “will strive to be a part of the solution for this crisis on a local level with Davis.”
10. Dalton, Ga.-based Vitruvian Health in August 2024 acquired Tennova Healthcare-Cleveland (Tenn.) from CHS for $160 million. Vitruvian, which rebranded from Hamilton Health Care System as part of its regional expansion plans, said acquiring the 351-bed hospital and its associated care locations “allows us to provide greater access to care in our region, enhance care coordination, empower local healthcare teams and advance clinical quality.”
