10 Things to Know About Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

The Boston area is ripe with several renowned hospitals and academic medical centers, some of the first in the country's history, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center fits right within that landscape.

Here are 10 things to know about Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

1. Kevin Tabb, MD, is the president and CEO of BIDMC. He started his tenure Oct. 17, 2011, and previously was the CMO of Stanford Hospital & Clinics in Palo Alto, Calif.

2. Steven Fischer serves as CFO of BIDMC. He has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare finance and has held other hospital CFO roles within the former Caritas Christi Health Care System in Boston, now known as Steward Health Care.

3. BIDMC has 631 licensed beds, including 429 medical/surgical beds, 77 critical care beds and 60 OB/GYN beds. It also is a Level I Trauma Center.

4. More than 6,000 people work at BIDMC, including more than 800 full-time staff physicians and more than 1,100 full-time registered nurses.

5. Last year, BIDMC recorded more than $2.59 billion in total revenue, according to the American Hospital Directory. Net income reached $63.7 million for a 2.5 percent profit margin.

6. In 2011, BIDMC had more than 41,000 inpatient discharges, more than 524,000 outpatient visits, more than 56,000 emergency department visits and more than 301,000 radiology visits.

7. The hospital is consistently ranked among the best in Boston and Massachusetts. In U.S. News & World Report's 2012-2013 rankings, BIDMC ranked third in Boston and third in Massachusetts for overall care. It was also nationally ranked in three specialties: cancer, gastroenterology and diabetes/endocrinology.

8. BIDMC is the result of the 1996 merger between Beth Israel Hospital and Deaconess Hospital. Beth Israel Hospital opened as a 45-bed facility in 1916, and Deaconess Hospital opened its doors in a five-story brownstone building in 1896.

9. BIDMC is the official hospital of the Boston Red Sox. For every home game at Fenway Park, 60 BIDMC nurses, physicians and techs from several departments rotate through the first aid station and treat roughly 25 to 70 people every game.

10. BIDMC plays home to a famous academic research program and the nation's oldest clinical research laboratory. Recently, BIDMC researchers found spine surgeons can save more than $126 million in surgery costs each year by implementing a simple intraoperative waste awareness program. They also recently found physicians are more likely to refer patients to providers who have similar backgrounds as the referring physician, and such informal networks could have implications for structures like accountable care organizations
