University of Buffalo medical school's dermatology residency program loses accreditation

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education has pulled the University of Buffalo (N.Y.) Jacobs School of Medicine Biomedical Sciences' dermatology residency program's accreditation, effective June 30, according to The Buffalo News.

University officials publicly disclosed the council's decision Wednesday. The council did not disclose the reasons for withdrawing the program's accreditation, according to the report.

The decision will affect eight residents who had previously committed to train in the medical school's dermatology residency program. The university's Office of Graduate Medical Education will reportedly work with the affected students to place them into different accredited dermatology residency programs at other facilities and offer support and assistance during the transition, according to the report.

"The decision made by the ACGME does not affect the university's dermatology education program for its medical students," said Michael Cain, MD, vice president for health sciences and dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine Biomedical Sciences, in a written statement obtained by The Buffalo News. "UB will continue to support dermatologic clinical care, teaching and research through the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences dermatology department."
