UNC School of Medicine also has campus locations in Asheville and Charlotte.
NHRMC is already considered a teaching hospital, and in 2013, it received $9.7 million in graduate medical education funding. As many as 24 medical students will be able to utilize the campus in Wilmington.
Part of the goal of the new campus is to increase the number of North Carolina physicians practicing in rural areas.
“We have been successfully teaching UNC medical students and residents for many decades, and now we have a tremendous opportunity to further develop our relationship with the UNC School of Medicine,” said Joseph Pino, MD, vice president of medical education at NHRMC and director of the UNC School of Medicine Wilmington Campus. “This program will provide students a long-term experience where they can become part of the fabric of our community.”
