Stony Brook medical school co-founder dies at 79

Bernard P. Lane, MD, one of the founding faculty members of Stony Brook (N.Y.) School of Medicine, died in his home July 5 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 79 years old, according to Newsday.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Lane.

1. Prior to his death, Dr. Lane spent 25 years as the residency program director in the department of pathology at the medical school. He also served as the director of autopsy service at the Stony Brook University Hospital, according to his faculty profile on the university’s website.

2. He served as a tenured professor in the medical school’s pathology department, where he taught from 1971 until his retirement in 2014.

3. Dr. Lane received his undergraduate degree from Providence, R.I.-based Brown University and obtained his medical degree from New York City-based New York University.

4. In addition to his work, Dr. Lane also served as chairman of the National Group on Faculty Practice of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the report states.

5. Dr. Lane’s funeral was held July 7. He is survived by his wife, daughter, two sons and four grandchildren.
