This marks a major step in South Nassau’s transition from community hospital to medical center. “Having our own residency programs is another part of our ongoing effort to constantly improve patient care and maintain the highest standards,” South Nassau President and CEO Richard Murphy said in a statement. “We will be able to hand select residents who participate, closely supervise their training and pick the very best to join our staff.”

The hospital launched its accredited surgical and obstetrics and gynecology residency training programs July 1. It plans to grow these programs to ultimately host 15 surgical and 12 obstetrics and gynecologic residents at a time.

South Nassau also sponsors family medicine, geriatrics and podiatry residencies and annually offers several hundred medical students undergraduate clinical experiences.
