NYU surgeon resigns following investigation into alleged inappropriate relationships with patients

A prominent New York City-based NYU Langone Health surgeon resigned following an investigation into his alleged inappropriate relationships with multiple patients, BuzzFeed News reports.

Mark Adelman, MD, served as chief of vascular surgery at the NYU School of Medicine and maintained privileges at NYU Langone Health hospitals.

NYU officials held a meeting with dozens of department employees April 25, during which they said Dr. Adelman had resigned following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate relationships with patients, a health system spokesperson confirmed to BuzzFeed News.

An employee present during the meeting, who asked BuzzFeed News to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, told the publication officials declined to say how many patients were involved, how long the alleged relationships lasted or whether Dr. Adelman contested the investigation's findings.

NYU Langone Health confirmed the investigation into Dr. Adelman to Becker's Hospital Review in a May 2 statement:

"We are extremely grateful to those who flagged Dr. Adelman's alleged inappropriate behavior. We took swift and immediate action, including conducting a thorough investigation, and consequently demanding Dr. Adelman's resignation. We continue to work with staff to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to voice any concerns in this matter, and to begin to set the department on a new course under new leadership."

An NYU spokesperson told BuzzFeed News an external firm conducted the investigation into the surgeon. However, the health system's human resources department also interviewed employees.
