Northwell names top Memorial Sloan Kettering physician to head up research efforts

New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health hired Richard R. Barakat, MD, to serve as physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, the health system announced Feb. 15.

Here are three things to know about Dr. Barakat.

1. In addition to his role as physician-in-chief of the cancer institute, Dr. Barakat will also serve as senior vice president of Northwell's cancer service line and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Hempstead, N.Y.-based Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

2. Dr. Barakat will join Northwell April 30, after spending 27 years at the New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he most recently served as director and vice chair of MSK's regional care network and affiliations, and as the Ronald O. Perelman Chair in gynecologic surgery.

3. He earned his bachelor's degree from Queens College, City University of New York, and earned his medical degree from Brooklyn, N.Y.-based SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
