Seton Hall-Hackensack Meridian medical school receives preliminary LCME accreditation

The proposed Seton Hall University-Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine received preliminary accreditation Feb. 14 from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, according to northjersey.com.

Here are five things to know about the accreditation and the medical school.

1. The medical school is the result of a partnership between South Orange, N.J.-based Seton Hall University and Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health. The organizations announced the venture in 2016.

2. With the preliminary accreditation, the medical school can begin recruiting for its 55-member inaugural class to enroll this fall, according to the report. The school still has two more steps during the next four years to receive full accreditation

3. The medical school, which will be located in Nutley and Clifton, N.J., will become the fifth medical school in the state, according to the report.

4. Bonita Stanton, MD, will serve as founding dean of the medical school.

5. "We are thrilled that our vision for a new approach to medical education is becoming reality. We are creating a rigorous academic curriculum that combines traditional science with a focus on the new frontiers in medicine — prevention and population health, genetics and team-based care delivery in communities," Hackensack Meridian Health said in a statement to the publication.
