Northwell Health launches podcast following first-year medical students

Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health launched a second health-focused podcast, entitled "Making an MD: Year One," to provide listeners with an in-depth look into the joys and challenges first-year medical students often face, Newsday reports.

Officials said they hope the podcast provides listeners with a better understanding of the ways in which medical education is changing to suit patients and their families.

The podcast will consist of 10 15-minute episodes featuring first-year medical students at the Hempstead, N.Y.-based Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. National Public Radio reporter Julie Subrin will produce and narrate the podcast. Three of the season's 10 episodes are already available for download.

"When I attended medical school … we were told to sit down, be quiet and memorize our textbook," Lawrence G. Smith, MD, founding dean and physician-in-chief of the medical school said. "Today, thankfully, we're much more focused on training doctors who can provide patients not only with excellent care but also with a genuine feeling that they're being heard. … There's no better way to show this shift than to let people in on what goes on in our classrooms."

Northwell's first podcast, "Health Story," focused on innovation and healthcare trends from the patient's perspective. The podcast premiered earlier this May.
