Built mostly with federal disaster funds, University Medical Center is intended to be the permanent successor to Charity Hospital, a state-run safety-net hospital.
The hospital had been operating at Interim LSU Hospital after Hurricane Katrina damaged Charity approximately 10 years ago.
Hospital leaders had been coordinating the logistics of the move from Interim LSU Hospital to University Medical Center for the past year. Between 7:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., 131 patients moved into their new rooms Saturday.
“It went extremely well and we couldn’t be more happy,” said Greg Feirn, CEO of LCMC Health, the system which runs University Medical Center.
The hospital includes the area’s only Level 1 trauma center.
