How this Cleveland Clinic program is curbing physician burnout

A physician peer coaching program might be one way for hospitals and health systems to fight burnout, according to the American Medical Association.  

Three things to know:

1. The Cleveland Clinic implemented a physician coaching program for its 4,000-member staff. The goal of the program is to increase job satisfaction and engagement, and to help staff members reach their professional goals.

2. The invite-only program matches physicians and other staffers with a peer coach to help with goal-setting and professional development. It includes a four-day intensive course comprising 90-minute training sessions and allows for pre- and post-training evaluations to help analyze coaches' performance. Core faculty members of each Cleveland Clinic department nominate individuals in different specialties based on their relationship-building skills and emotional intelligence, among other factors.

3. Annual surveys of the program have found that 64 percent of coaches and 71 percent of coachees said the program has helped them develop their careers.
