Henry Ford physician in critical condition after stopping on interstate to help car crash victims

A Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System physician is in critical condition after she was hit by an oncoming car while attempting to help the victims of an earlier car collision, according to the Detroit Free Press.

First Lieutenant Denise Powell of the Michigan State Police said Cynthia Ray, MD, and a family of three stopped shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday to help six individuals trapped in an overturned Jeep SUV. Police said the Jeep "took the curve too fast and struck the median wall in the left-hand lane," according to the report.

Lt. Powell said the four individuals got out of their respective vehicles to help those trapped inside the Jeep when a second oncoming vehicle hit Dr. Ray and 17-year-old Sean English, according to the report.

"Several motorists stopped to help, which was a doctor and a mother, father and son. They were out trying to help these six occupants," said Lt. Powell. "In the meantime another car comes around the curve, isn't able to stop, loses control and goes into a spin and strikes the pedestrians out helping the drivers of the first car."

Mr. English, Dr. Ray and the driver of the second vehicle are reportedly in critical condition. Mr. English's foot was injured in the crash and reportedly amputated. Dr. Ray underwent neurosurgery at Detroit-based Sinai Grace Hospital, according to the report.

Police are investigating whether alcohol was involved in either crash, according to the report.

In response to the event, Henry Ford Health System released the following statement: "We were so saddened to hear the news about Dr. Cynthia Ray. Ray has been with the Henry Ford family since 2005 and is widely known as a stellar physician and kind, compassionate colleague. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Ray's family and the entire Henry Ford pulmonary team.''
