Fewer Texas Physicians Accepting Medicare, Medicaid Patients

Low reimbursement rates and administrative burdens may be driving physicians away from Medicare and Medicaid patients in Texas, according to findings from a recent Texas Medical Association survey.

According to results from the recent survey of more than 1,000 Texas physicians, thirty-one percent currently accept Medicaid patients; that's down from 42 percent in 2010. A little over a decade ago, more than two-thirds of all Texas physicians accepted Medicaid patients, according to the medical association.

Texas physicians are also cutting back on Medicare patients. According to the biennial survey, the percentage of physicians in the state accepting new Medicare patients dropped from 66 percent in 2010 to 58 percent this year.
