AmSurg's physician division buys North Florida Anesthesia Consultants

The rapidly growing anesthesiology services arm of Sheridan, the Nashville, Tenn.-based physician services division of AmSurg, has acquired another practice, this time a 70-provider group based in Jacksonville, Fla.

The recently-acquired North Florida Anesthesia Consultants provides both inpatient and outpatient services to 18 facilities in Florida, primarily Ascension Health's St. Vincent's hospitals and Hospital Corporation of America's surgery centers in Jacksonville.

The acquisition marks Sheridan's first significant expansion in the Jacksonville market and anchors plans to develop its presence in the greater northeast Florida market.

"For more than 25 years, North Florida Anesthesia Consultants has provided excellent care to the patients of northeast Florida," Kevin Donovan, MD, president and CEO of North Florida Anesthesia Consultants, said in a statement. "We have conducted a multi-year process to choose a strategic partner to help meet the challenges of a changing U.S. healthcare market. After a thorough search, we selected Sheridan as the strategic partner we felt would best position us to continue our tradition of excellence, preserve the culture of our group and help us thrive in this challenging market."

Over the past year, Sheridan has snapped up a handful of other practices, including Atlanta-based Northside Anesthesiology Consultants and Valley Anesthesiology & Pain Consultants in Phoenix.
