A snowstorm left this ER physician skiing to work

Your grandparents may have walked uphill both ways in three feet of snow to school, but this emergency physician has snowshoed to medical school before, and last week he strapped on cross-country skis to get to work in a record-breaking snowfall.

When Daniel Gale, MD, woke up last Tuesday to shovel knee-high snow from his sidewalk and driveway, not a snowplow was in sight, according to WBAY-TV. Yet as an emergency medicine physician at Oshkosh, Wis.-based Aurora Medical Center, he knew he couldn’t take a snow day.

Since it would take far too long to walk the mile and a half to work in the snow, he put his gear in his backpack and set out skiing. Dr. Gale made it to work in just 20 minutes and brightened many patients’ and coworkers’ day.

“A lot of them said that made it worth the trip seeing me walk through the front door with skis in my hands. They were pretty tickled by it,” Dr. Gale told WBAY. The only drawback was he forgot an extra pair of shoes — so he wore his snow boots until the roads cleared and his family was able to drop off normal shoes, according to the report.
