8 Statistics on Hospital-Physician Alignment Models

The most popular physician structure within hospitals is the integrated salary model, with more than one-third of all U.S. community hospitals using it.

The hospital data originate from the American Hospital Association's 2014 edition of AHA Hospital Statistics.

The second-most common physician model at hospitals is an open physician-hospital organization, a structure in which any medical staff may apply.

Here are eight statistics on hospital-physician alignment models, based on the 2014 edition of AHA Hospital Statistics. Note: Data are from 2012 and based on 4,999 community hospitals.

Types of physician models in community hospitals
Integrated salary model: 36.9 percent
Open physician-hospital organization: 12.4 percent
Independent practice association: 9.9 percent
Management service organization: 8.8 percent
Medical foundation: 5.4 percent
Closed physician-hospital organization: 4.4 percent
Group practice without walls: 3.3 percent
Equity model: 1.7 percent
