The AAP survey gathered data from the 2009-11 residency graduates cohort and the 2002-04 residency graduates cohort. Each cohort consists of 900 participants and includes AAP members and nonmembers and general pediatricians, subspecialists and hospitalists. Seventy-one percent of participants responded to the survey, which was conducted in fall 2017.
Here are the 12 most stressful job factors for early career pediatricians, ranked according to the percentage of early to mid-career pediatricians who said these work aspects were very or moderately stressful.
1. Finishing/catching up on work at home (52 percent)
2. Documenting patient information in EHR (48 percent)
3. Completing nonclinical activities (42 percent)
4. Completing external regulatory requirements (41 percent)
5. Keeping current on medical knowledge (33 percent)
6. Responding to current healthcare debate (32 percent)
7. Negotiating salary, contract, promotion (32 percent)
8. Linking families with resources (31 percent)
9. Working with patients’ families (20 percent)
10. Providing care to children and adolescents (20 percent)
11. Coordinating patient care (16 percent)
12. Working with colleagues (12 percent)
