Virginia's Inova Utilizes Church Volunteers to Reach Underserved

As hospitals try to connect with underserved populations in their communities, some providers — such as Falls Church, Va.-based Inova Health System — are turning to church volunteers, according to a National Public Radio report.

Inova has trained 30 volunteers at five local churches to help women in their congregations receive prenatal healthcare, according to the report. The volunteers also assist the women with any questions they may have regarding documentation and insurance requirements.

Although it is undetermined how many health systems have affiliations with churches, the Department of Health and Human Services and its member agency the Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships said the principle behind the initiatives has the potential to reach a vast number of underserved and uninsured people, according to the report.
