Will ACA tariffs be repealed in tax reform effort?

On March 24, the American Health Care Act was pulled from the House floor, leaving the ACA in effect for the time being. The GOP’s bill included delaying the ACA’s Cadillac tax on luxury employer-sponsored health plans to 2026, as well as the repeal of ACA taxes such as the medical device tax and health insurance tax.

Now Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said he sees a couple of ways to potentially repeal ACA taxes — through a revamp of the U.S. tax code or through a new ACA replacement bill, reports Reuters.

“Either, as far as I’m concerned,” Sen. Hatch said, according to Reuters. “Any way we can get rid of those, I think it’d be a good thing.”

However, the idea of repealing ACA taxes through tax reform would likely evoke pushback from Democrats. According to the report, members of the party claim ACA taxes assist many Americans in purchasing insurance coverage.
