Why one leader encourages his employees to consider outside job offers

Attracting top talent is not enough to ensure organizational success;  leaders must also retain that talent. Ryan Bonnici, chief marketing officer of G2 Crowd, says encouraging his employees to consider outside offers is a surprisingly effective way to retain them, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Here is why Mr. Bonnici’s unusual method helps him curate a highly effective team:

1. Employees want development, not lip service. Employees crave opportunities to learn and grow, and if their manager encourages them to pursue outside jobs that offer those opportunities, they see their manager is truly dedicated to their development. Employees who feel supported by a manager who believes in them are more likely to stay on.

2. Openness allows conversations to thrive. By taking away the taboo  of seeking outside job opportunities, Mr. Bonnici fosters a culture of openness where employees feel comfortable sharing their honest feelings.

3. There are benefits to their leaving. If high-performing employees leave amicably, they are more likely to speak highly of their former company and encourage other great people to join the team.

4. They’re more likely to return. Boomerang employees are on the rise, and great employees who leave could return, so leaders must try not to sour the relationship.
